Ordered a handful of kits last night, could be a fun project. Less rivets and special tools than an AK but more involved than slapping together an AR. Apex still has tons of kits with the 15.5 barrel, thinking I will pin and weld a thread adapter to 5/8 on the front to get to the 16" length. No sense spending a stamp for 1/2".
Something like $400 bucks for one with 3 mags included. As far as I know that is still way cheaper than any entry level AK on the market right now and you get three mags. When using actual VZ mags the VZ has last shot hold open and it stays open after you remove the mag too. The AK definitely has better aftermarket though.
In summary, the Vz-58 is a lightweight, reliable firearm designed to make the individual shooter’s job easier. It is affordable and available, and in my opinion, a superior firearm than the AK platform in 7.62×39. Why is the Vz58 better than the AK-47? The Vz-58 utilizes a short stroke gas piston, while the AK-47 has a long stroke gas piston. Now we see that second generation of “assault rifles”, spawned by Stg.44, was in fact split into two groups – one firing “intermediate” ammunition, such as German Stg.44, Soviet AK-47 or Czechoslovak SA Vz.58, and another, firing full-power ammunition, such as American M14 and Ar10, Belgian FN FAL, German G3 or Swiss Stg.57.
The AK’s aftermarket products are a type of garbage. If you’re not happy with the lack of aftermarket modifications for the Vz-58, go for a pink look. As an alternative to the AK platform, this is a low-cost and readily available firearm. Why Is The Vz 58 Better Than Ak-47?
For the same price as a modified Siaga, the VZ-58 will tend to be a better rifle, in my opinion. The AK will have more modification alternatives, but as a shooter, the VZ will be a better one. They will both be equally reliable. The VZ will be smoother in operation. You can't go wrong either way, of course.

I totally agree with you. If you're left handed this must be a treat compared to other guns. And I couldn't agree more about the accuracy. Of course a well tuned, modern built ak will be more accurate, but when talking about vz.58 made in the 50's and 60's and Soviet surplus AK's, the vz is the clear winer.

AK47 Bottom Cap (for Black Grip) AK082 This bottom cap is for our black AK47 grip, item #GRP220 Original, used, excellent condition. $3.00. The Yugoslavs would eventually settle on using a receiver in the style of the RPK light machine gun version of the AK-47 that uses thicker 1.5 mm stamped metal and a heavy-duty "bulged" front
58: orig barrel is something like 15.5". They have to pin a short muzzle device to get to >16". 2008: barrel is made >16". 58: bayonet lug ground off (import issue?) (note, a new front sight w/ lug is ~$20 on the web but you'll have to unpin muzzle device, replace sight, repin.

First - even AK-47 would be Stgw.44 clone by some ways Second - Czechoslovakia had pretty long history of gun design and making, even semi-auto and full auto ones. Vz.58 is completely different design than AK-47 and at the beginning it wasn't even supposed to use the same cartridge - Czechoslovakia had it own "middle" power cartridge.
