Best "fix" is to exit back to the previous menu, slide "Play Game" to "Public" (or off-and-on again, if already selected), and then go to "Join Game" and try again. Might take a couple tries, but has never needed more than 2-3 for me. (On PS4, if it matters.) It's only "falling in love" because you hit the ground.

Ironically it will remember that you have unlocked dog companion skill, but your actually character save data will be gone. r/remnantgame.
